Tonga. On Friday and Saturday, January 14 and 15, 2022, the Hunga Tonga – Hunga Haʻapai submarine volcano exploded on the uninhabited Tonga Islands. It also caused tsunamis in the Pacific Ocean, which flooded the coast from Japan to the United States and killed two people in Peru. Pressure waves from the eruption were also recorded in Slovakia. The eruption and tsunami affected the lives of about 84,000 people, representing more than 80 percent of the island’s population, said Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General.
Australia and New Zealand have already provided humanitarian aid to the country. Servare et Manere has partners and friends in the Kingdom of Tonga thanks to the implementation of the international Tree of Peace initiative. Since 2020, His Eminence Soane Patita Paini Cardinal Mafi, Bishop of Tonga, has been one of the Friends of Peace. Cardinal Mafi is also the Representative of the initiative for Tonga.
Servare et Manere has therefore decided to provide humanitarian aid to the country through the #slovakiafortonga public fundraiser. The transparent account number of the public fundraiser is SK28 0900 0000 0051 8680 9301. The fundraiser was registered by the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic with the approval of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs under the registration number 000-2022-014416. You can check the registration at this link. The fundraiser is also published on the Ministry’s portal.
We are very honored that our intention was supported by the Slovak Embassy in Japan / 駐日スロヴァキア大使館 and also by the British Embassy in Bratislava.
